A few months ago, a visitor to our Facebook page dropped me a line and put me in touch with Laurence Myers.
Laurence has enjoyed a phenomenal career in theatre, movies and music. He was also the co-founder of Gem – a music management company. Their first ‘hit’ was ‘Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) by Edison Lighthouse.
On the 1st August 1970, he signed an unremarkable singer called David Bowie. To find out much more about Laurence and his relationship with Bowie, then grab yourself a copy of his autobiography ‘Hunky Dory (Who knew?). It’s a fabulous read (the audiobook version is thoroughly enjoyable) with wonderful stories and anecdotes about the music industry at the time that Bowie was becoming a superstar. Of particular interest is Laurence’s interest with Tony DeFries, the birth of MainMan and an in-depth explanation of ‘that deal’ which the Bowie’s signed.
Anyway, I asked Laurence if he has any idea who our mystery man is. He doesn’t.
However, it was an absolute pleasure to converse with him and I sincerely thank Laurence for his time.
