Thanks to Arnaud for an email which suggests Bon Scott as a contender for Mr X.
I’ll be honest – I didn’t have a clue who Bon was. So if you’re like me, here’s an overview.
Bon was born in Scotland in 1946 and the family emigrated to Australia in 1952. Bon played in many bands but didn’t really return to the UK until 1972 with his band Fraternity. They supported Status Quo in August 1972 but fame didn’t come their way. The UK was a bit glam-rock and Fraternity were more blues/country. According to some information I discovered in the Encyclopaedia of Australian Rock ‘n’ Pop, Fraternity changed their name to Fang whilst in the UK then scuttled off back to Australia at the end of 1973.
Bon is most famous his tenure as lead singer of AC-DC. He died in 1980.
Once again, I can’t really link Bon to Bowie or the Cafe Royal. Bon was in the UK at the time of the party and was a seasoned drinker and smoker. At the time, Bowie and Bon were the same age (26) so from a social perspective, they would possible fit together. I’ve spent a few hours looking at Bon’s photos and in some he looks like Mr X and in others, he doesn’t.
As Bon is no longer alive, we’ll never get a first person testimony but I’ve researched three leads who I think should be able to confirm Mr X as Bon. I’ll let you know.
