Thanks to all that have sent me information and suggestions. I now have a few more people to chase in our quest to find Mr X.
I’ve also had many emails about the three different versions of the image and thanks to a few people on Facebook (thank you Philippe, CDT and Trevor) a fourth version has been unearthed.
As you can see, it shows Mr X with a different expression – smiling, sharing a joke and generally being very much part of the group. Sadly, he’s not wearing a t-shirt with his name on, but I’d like to think that it’s another nail in the coffin of the “it’s just some dude” theory. BTW – doesn’t Angie look like she’s having fun?
What I find interesting about this image is that it’s rare. Scour the web and three other versions (Image 1, Image 2, Image 3) of the ‘shot’ come up time and again, but this one remains hidden. However, looking at the expression on David’s face, I can see why it’s been shoved in a vault.
Sadly I don’t know which publication it is from or indeed when it was published. I’m hoping someone – one of you good people with huge Bowie scrapbooks – may have this tucked away somwhere. Here are some other versions that I’ve been sent:
So that’s my request. Would you please have a dig around in your fandoms to see if we can put a publication source to this rare image.
In the above magazine article you have posted in the first paragraph it states:
“what was it really like that night? Well HIT! was there”
“HIT! ” magazine was alive and well in1973 UK. It looks like they published at least 2 magazines per month in 1973. What little I have found online about the magazine is that it was very popular and was mainly full of posters so complete copies are rare.

Hi Andy. Thanks for the getting in touch. As it happens, I’ll be seeing Mike next week in Manchester, so if I get a chance to ask, I will. According to a few sources I’ve read, Mike wasn’t at the party. You’ll probably know that at the time he was a practising Scientologist and it has been suggested that his beliefs kept him away from the Ziggy party scene.

Thanks for dropping me a line. I think Woody certainly dabbled. I seem to recall that Garson was known as ‘Garson the Parson’ and officiated at Woody’s wedding to June. I don’t recall reading that Bowie dabbled in Scientology, just Buddhism. Mike’s book ‘Bowie’s Piano Man‘ is certainly worth a read, as of course is Woody’s book
